The Happiness Cardigan

I have been entirely remiss in updating both here and on Ravelry. In fact I knit a whole sweater in the time I've been off playing hooky.

Perhaps I kept thinking, tomorrow I'll take pictures and *then* I'll update. Well the sweater in question is blocking on my mini trampoline and I still haven't taken any pictures yet. Such is life.

I got a nice deal a while back on lovely wool alpaca blend (Berkshire)from Webs in a nice, goes with everything, medium gray. This yarn is a single, which I normally avoid, but it's got a great twist and doesn't seem as prone to pilling as most singles. The alpaca fibers are quite long and seem to hold everything together nicely. It's quite reminiscent of Lambs Pride worsted, only firmer and sans the (to me) mohair itch.

Anyway, I've been josing for a nice longish cozy cardigan, and this yarn seemed just the ticket. I took the basic design of Sweater 19 from The Fall 06 Vogue, lengthened it a bit and added some celtic knotwork to the back. I used a lovely cable design from Elsbeth Lavold, set of intersecting diamonds that I believe she calls the happiness cable (or something to that effect, I'm at lunch and away from my books) The sweater as written just had a pair of cables running up both sides of the front and plain stockinette back.

There were a few errors in the pattern, but thanks to Ravelry (angels singing) I didn't even have to remember to look for errata.

The sweater was also written for a model with tiny tiny forarms, so I did away with the massive decreases after the ribbing and spread out the increases for a nice human proportioned sleeve. (Seriously, it was craziness how tight the arms would have been)

The fun part of this knit was the massive doubled shawl collar. I must have skimmed the finishing directions the first time through because I was totally surprised when I got to the button band/collar section and found that Each side took half again as much yarn as each front piece. It was the collar that would not die. I spent 3 days knitting it. I wanted cozy and this will definitely be it, though.

Hopefully by tomorrow the beast will finally be completely dry and I'll be able to sew on the lovely wooden buttons that I picked up at Amandas. They have stylized running horses on them and seemed to go with the happiness theme.

Pictures this weekend!
